Both images have their location data set to Winchester, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. No metadata corruption is reported. My guess is that GeoSetter doesn't correctly handle the shift of metadata sections in the image file when padding and extra metadata is added to the file. I would consider that to be a bug in GeoSetter.

Regarding the times. Both files show the same capture datetime in Pro Photo Tools and Windows Explorer for me: 2009-05-25 12:39 PM. In Pro Photo Tools the EXIF date is shown as 2009-05-25 10:39 PM, because I am in GMT+0100 with DST. What does appear odd to me is that your pictures files have EXIF, IPTC and GPS datetimes, while my own photos only have an EXIF date.

I am afraid there isn't more that I can do as I can spot no bug in FlickrMetadataSynchr for this issue.

Commented Issue: Time Zone issue [10622]

Hi,

Thanks for creating this great tool!

I use GeoSetter to edit my geotagging and timezone information. I've now uploaded an example that you can download and have a look at: http://bit.ly/19aFfa

There are two files in this example. The original file was downloaded from Flickr through FMSynchr with the "Simulate update metadata" switch on. The other one was downloaded with this switch off.

When you open this two images in GeoSetter, you can see that the time is offset by several hours in the updated file.

In addition, the "Sublocation" field in GeoSetter reports "Winchester", while the modified image reports a "-".

Last important observation: On the modified image, GeoSetter reports "Bad IPTC data tag (marker 0x0)".

Thanks for looking into this!

Regards,
Ketil

Commented Issue: Time Zone issue [10622]

Hi,

Thanks for creating this great tool!

I use GeoSetter to edit my geotagging and timezone information. That's because Picasa can't read XMP metadata, but pulls the keywords from the IPTC metadata section.

FlickrMetadataSynchr uses the "System. Keywords" property of WIC to read/write keywords/tags from local image files.

The Microsoft Photo Metadata Policy for System. Keywords does already read from "/app13/irb/8bimiptc/iptc/keywords" if present, but doesn't write to it if no IPTC keywords are already present in the file. That part is working fine; FlickrMetadataSynchr does indeed write the keywords to IPTC if that section exists. As you mentioned, what's not working is writing IPTC keywords to files that don't yet have any.

In more detail, here's what's working:

Add IPTC keywords with Picasa. Sync with FlickrMetadataSynchr. Keywords are added to Flickr, and to XMP.

Remove one or more tags from Flickr. Sync with FlickrMetadataSynchr (assuming "newest wins" option is selected). Tags are removed from IPTC and XMP.

Here's what's NOT working:

Remove one or more IPTC keywords with Picasa. Sync with FlickrMetadataSynchr with "newest wins" selected. The deleted IPTC tags are removed from flickr, but remain in XMP. (So this is Picasa's fault for not updating XMP.)

Take an original picture without any IPTC keywords. Add flickr tags and sync with FlickrMetadataSynchr. XMP keywords are added to the local file, but not IPTC. (You are already aware of this issue.)

Take a picture with IPTC keywords and XMP keywords. Delete a tag from flickr or delete an XMP keyword from the local file. Sync with FlickrMetadataSynchr. The keyword is no longer in IPTC, XMP or flickr, but it annoyingly remains in Picasa's keyword popup! That's because Picasa keeps its own separate database. The only way to refresh it (that I know of) is to rebuid the entire database--by uninstalling and reinstalling Picasa--or to cut and paste the file to a folder not monitored by Picasa and then cut/paste the file back in a Picasa-monitored folder, etc. (This is obviously Picasa's bug and there's nothing we can do about that.)

Fortunately deletes of keywords/tags are not very frequent compared to additions. So, in my opinion the only real flaw of FlickrMetadataSynchr (or rather, System. Keywords) is that it doesn't add the IPTC keywords section if it's not already there. I have a feeling that is the only problem fjordaan was running into.

Created Issue: Consider explicitly updating keywords in IPTC metadata and not just in XMP

It was reported that Picasa can't see updates to the keywords in the metadata of files after using FlickrMetadataSynchr.
